XR Cinema | DÖR

Game Developer

DÖR is a cinema theater that literally gives the audience access to a fictional parallel world and is physically placed at the center of the cinematic narrative. The idea is owned by Makropol, a company that merges VR, art, installation and performance, based in Copenhagen.

During the phase of fundraising, a VR simulation of this new place was needed. An interactive experience showing the general structure of the new space and the feeling of the experience room, a room where anything can happen. A physical product is, of course, more powerful and more promising for investors. That’s why the vision of design and programming set up in between creating a publishable VR experience and an impressive simulation looks like a potential investment.

I had the all technical responsibility as the developer. Unity is being used as the editor on programming.  I have been the main person on Unity, merging the 3D environment with sounds. In 3 months time of execution, 5 different versions had been created and implemented. Only 3 of them will be presented in this paper. Versions, basically are using different technologies with different needs. It was a process for me to investigate relativity of these extensions and decide on the optimizations.

The project is being developed in 3 months, during this time it has been shown in several events. It is being represented with 3 different headsets answering our different needs for the showcases. It was an agile development process. The product is modified multiple times for the specific desires of the next presentation. It has been started with HTC Vive with 2 controllers. Later in the execution, it was decided to use Leap Motion technology for hand tracking instead of controllers. For another showcase, we needed bigger area tracking. So HTC Vive Pro with Lighthouses version 2.0 is used. HTC Vive Focus was the last headset we needed because it provides 6 degrees of freedom. Additional trackers and VR backpack computers are the other technologies that are being used during the project.

Access to DÖR goes through a lobby bar that is open to the public. In the lobby’s one wall is a blue door, Towards the ticket will open to the actual experience. The specially designed experience room of 100 m2 will be used by the most modern VR headsets, motion-capture systems and 3D speakers to create live dreams like the audience can physically move around. After the experience, the audience has exclusive access to a lounge where drinks and snacks are served while the experience is digested. DÖR presents the strongest original XR experiences from home and abroad, both externally and internally produced. DÖR’s primary audience is 25-45 years old, quality-conscious and curious about innovative film, art, and cultural experiences. DÖR’s secondary target group is cultural tourists and B2B customers.
